Abstract:
A paper presented at the Third Annual Conference of the Australian Association for Jewish Studies, Melbourne, July 1989. Surveys Jewish life in Poland, based on recent historiography, and emphasizes the Jewish view of Poland as an hospitable environment. Describes the rise of Polish and Russian nationalism in the mid-19th century in which the Jews were trapped as scapegoats, increasing antisemitism, and anti-Polish sentiments among the Jews. However, despite this, the image of Polish-Jewish fraternity persisted until 1939.
