Abstract:
Based largely on protocols of the trials of Nazi war criminals, relates the establishment of the SIPO (German security police) branch in Tarnów (northeast Poland) between September-November 1939, consisting of 20-30 Gestapo men and a small unit of the criminal police (KRIPO). Two SD men acted independently. Other German police units functioned in Tarnów: Schupo - ca. 20 men, responsible for order inside the city limits, and in charge of the 100 Polish policemen; Orpo - a regiment under orders to the SS and the General-Government police headquarters; the gendarmerie - functioned outside the city limits; and the Sonderdienst - an armed unit of Polish "Volksdeutsche", under orders to the civilian administration. In 1942 there were 40,000 Jews in Tarnów. There were four periods of deportation: June, September and November 1942, and September 1943. Relates how the above units organized and carried out the deportations, aided by the Polish police and Polish "Baudienst" (which numbered 600-700 men).
