Abstract:
Surveys the recent debate on antisemitism in the New Testament. Discusses, first, the term "antisemitism, " arguing that it can be used here because some New Testament passages on the Jews are too virulent to be termed "anti-Judaism." Focuses on Rosemary Ruether's "Faith and Fratricide" (1974) and her assertion that anti-Judaism is the "left hand of Christology." Deals, especially, with the second chapter, on the rejection of the Jews in the New Testament. The clash between the Pharisees and the nascent Church on interpretation of the Scriptures, and the turn towards the Gentiles, led to the accusation that the Jews had rejected salvation and killed the messiah. "The Jews, " as such, were blamed for the death of Jesus. Disagrees with Ruether's view that New Testament anti-Judaism stems from the central confession that Jesus is the messiah. Discusses some responses to Ruether, both supportive and critical, contending that any serious study of antisemitism in the New Testament cannot afford to neglect the issues she has raised.
