    Abstract: Traces discriminatory measures and persecution of Jews in Morocco. From 1860 on, European Jewry, especially in France and England, became more aware of the plight of Morocco's Jews due to reports by diplomats and tourists. In February 1864, Montefiore visited Sultan Muhammad XVIII in Marrakesh and presented a document requesting that the Jews be protected, and that they be accorded the same advantages as the other subjects of the Sultan. The Sultan acquiesced to the first request, as it complied with Islamic law, but refused the second. In the 1860s-80s acts of violence against Jews increased in Morocco, including arrests, public beatings, murder and expulsion, extortion, and arbitrary regulations imposed by local rulers. Presents the text of a letter sent by Jewish notables of Fez in March 1880 to the Alliance Israélite Universelle in Paris, stating that the Jews' situation had worsened, and relating incidents of murder and pogroms in Fez, murder of the head of the Jewish community in Taza, and a rule against Jews wearing shoes in Meknes. Those Jews who received protection from European consuls in the port cities fared better, but the others continued to suffer persecution.

    Abstract: Surveys Arabic literature of the 20th century (mainly from Egypt). In the earlier part of the century Arab writers followed the Western style of thought and emphasized universal themes (e.g. Khalil Gibran, Taha Hussein, Tawfik al-Hakim). Writers who attempted to counter anti-Jewish propaganda early on were Lebanese-born Georgi Zeidan (1861-1914) who founded the Egyptian monthly journal "Al-Hilal", and his son Emil Zeidan. al-Hakim's play "Muhammad" (1936) presents proud Jews who contest Muhammad's accusations against them. Since 1950 there has been a nationalistic, religious, and restrictive trend among writers, who depict Jews in very antisemitic terms. Stereotypical images are borrowed from medieval Islamic works and from Christian antisemitic literature. In many works the distorted image was transferred from "the Jew" to "the Israeli" or "the Israeli soldier, " who is shown as pitiful, arrogant, cowardly, racist, devious, etc. States that only a few of the important contemporary Arab prose writers have depicted Jews in their works, and even then the Jews are marginal characters.
