Abstract:
Describes, in detail, the fate of the Jews of Budapest between October 1944-February 1945, during the rule of the Arrow Cross party and the Soviet siege of Budapest, when many of the Jews in Budapest were murdered by Arrow Cross gangs. Traces the involvement of Pál Szalai - an Arrow Cross party member who was nominated in November 1944 as the coordinator between the party and the Hungarian police in Budapest - in some rescue acts related to Budapest and its ghettos, some of which were initiated by Raoul Wallenberg. Contends that although Szalai is connected to some rescue acts, he was just one factor in a long and complicated line of circumstancial actions which were not initiated by him. Therefore, he could hardly be a candidate for the award of "Righteous among the Nations".
