Abstract:
States that ca. 1.5 million Jews participated in warfare against the Nazis as soldiers in the Allied armies. Discusses the approximate number of Jewish soldiers who served in each army: 500,000 served in the Soviet army, of whom 200,000 were killed; 550,000 served in the U.S. army, of whom 18,500 were killed; 200,000 served in the various Polish armies, of whom 32,000 were killed; and 126,000 served in armies of the British Empire (including Jews from Eretz Israel), of whom 3,100 were killed. Although there are no statistics for the French armies, estimates that 35,000 Jews served and 4,000 were killed. Thousands of Czech Jews who fled when their country was occupied by the Nazis joined the armed forces of other countries. Relates, also, the role of Jews in the armies of Greece, Yugoslavia, and Belgium; the role of Jewish women who served, particularly in the Soviet army; and the numbers of Jewish soldiers who received medals in various countries.
