Abstract:
Discusses the fate of the Jewish community of Sobienie Jeziory (35 km south of Warsaw), which consisted of ca. 1,700 Jews before World War II, approximately three-quarters of the population. By October 1941, with the addition of refugees, there were 3,680 Jews living there. Describes difficulties faced by the Judenrat in providing for the refugees, the taking of Jews for forced labor, and the ghettoization in September 1941. One year later the ghetto was liquidated; most of the Jews were deported to Treblinka and very few survived.
