Abstract:
Discusses the case of a blood libel accusation in Metz in 1669. Raphaël Lévy, condemned by the Parliament of Metz, was tortured and burned at the stake. States that this was only one case of a series of accusations, and that the ritual murder myth was prevalent in this region in the 17th century. Analyzes the attitude of the Jewish community of Metz after the "Raphaël Lévy affair" and states that the reaction of the leaders was courageous and militant. Attempts to explain this stance, which contradicts the widespread image of Jews suffering calumnies and outrages in silence under Louis XIV.
