Abstract:
In light of opinions of several rabbinic authorities (expressed in the Mishnah and the Talmud) regarding the problem of surrendering Jews to the Gentile authorities, presents examples of how rabbis of threatened communities during the Holocaust applied the Halakhah when they were faced by the quandary of which Jews were to fill the deportation quotas demanded by the Germans. Discusses the issue, which arose on many occasions during the Holocaust, under what conditions it is permissible to sacrifice one life for another or others.
