Abstract:
Several characteristics link the account of David’s dance in front of the ark of Yahweh, upon his entry into Jerusalem (2 Sam. 6:12-23), the descriptions of Theseus’ dance in Delos, the geranos, and the curious rite of lupercalia in Rome: human or animal sacrifices, transport of sacred objects, circularity, the foundation of a rite or of a cult, a relation to human fertility, and – in two cases – the nudity of the celebrant.
