Abstract:
Surveys the presentation of the expulsion from Spain and Portugal, the persecutions of the Inquisition, and the image of Don Isaac Abravanel in popular literary and historical works published in Poland, Russia, and the USA during the late 19th-early 20th centuries. Focuses on works by Moshe Eliezer Beilinson, Nahum Meyer Shaikevich, Abraham Shalom Friedberg and others, who also published translations and popularized versions of works originally written in Hebrew and German, which they adapted to suit the mentality of the ordinary Yiddish-speaking public in order to cultivate their consciousness of Jewish history. Their writings described martyrological responses to the Diaspora reality and related to historical events of their own time, such as anti-Jewish riots and the Spanish-American conflict of 1898 over Cuba.
