Abstract:
Despite the recent expansion of cultural contacts, Polish-Jewish relations remain problematic. Participants in a conference on Jewish history in Poland, held in Cracow in September 1986, found important differences in historical memory and attitudes. While Jews are anxious to commemorate the Jewish past in Poland, and their suffering during the Holocaust, Poles see themselves as the main victims of World War II and avoid the issue of Polish antisemitism. The Poles' revived interest in Jews arises from hostility to the USSR (the common enemy), nostalgia among young intellectuals for a lively and pluralistic culture, and recent improvements in the Catholic attitude towards Jews. Poland today is a religiously and nationally homogeneous country in which the Jewish tradition has no place, and antisemitism still plays a part in politics.
