Abstract:
Based on archival sources and interviews conducted by Wegner with 38 people who emigrated to Uruguay and two who emigrated to Buenos Aires. Ca. 7,000-9,000 German-speaking refugees entered Uruguay in 1933-42, 95% of them Jews or Christians of Jewish origin. Describes the process of leaving Germany and the routes of emigration (many émigrés came from other countries which were occupied by the Nazis). Uruguay was not always favorable to the refugees - it tightened its immigration laws in the 1930s, it sometimes rejected refugees, and there were antisemitic and even pro-Nazi forces in the country. However, Uruguay did not close its doors to the Jews (as did Paraguay and Brazil), it permitted emigrants bound for other South American countries to stop in Uruguay, and it did not deport those who were rejected by Paraguay. Describes the economic and cultural activities of German Jewish immigrants in Uruguay.
