Abstract:
Queries why Jews were leading characters in Elizabethan plays when by the last decade of the 16th century Jews had been banned from England for three centuries. Using the texts of Marlowe and Shakespeare, answers that in a country where every criticism of the Christian state was outlawed and punishable, both playwrights exploited the anti-Jewish stereotype and the popular prejudice it excited to fashion plays that expose Christian hypocrisy more than they denounce Jewish villainy.
