Abstract:
Discusses the activities and ideology of Rabbi Joseph Samuel Bloch (1850-1923), an Austrian Jewish politician and journalist. In addition to espousing an ideology of Jewish identity that contrasted with that of assimilation, Bloch used his position as a representative in the Reichsrat to speak out against antisemitism, in contrast to other Austrian Jews who preferred to maintain a low profile. He first gained prominence by showing up the ignorance of the antisemite August Rohling. Bloch founded the Österreichisch-Israelitische Union to defend Jews and fight against antisemitism. For 37 years he edited and published the Jewish periodical "Österreichische Wochenschrift", which expressed his ideas, including the folly of Jewish support for German nationalism, even in a liberal form, since he foresaw that many of its adherents would eventually become antisemites.
