Abstract:
Describes Jewish life in villages and towns in 18th-century Germany, based on the accounts of Protestant Christian missionaries who travelled the land in an attempt to convert the Jews. The information is based on reports sent to the Institutum Judaicum, a collection of some seventy-odd volumes. Despite their Christian bias, and modest success in converting Jews, these reports contain many details on all aspects of Jewish life: occupations, housing, business practices, family affairs, language (especially Yiddish), education and religious practices.
