Abstract:
Describes a campaign undertaken by the German-language journal "Aufbau" to inform American readers about the inhuman conditions in the camp of Gurs, and to appeal for help for the internees. Quotes items from the paper, including reports sent to America in 1940-41 by German Jews who had been deported to Gurs. Gives details about contributions made by American Jews and Jewish organizations (money, clothing, food, and medicine). In August 1942, as the deportations from Gurs to Auschwitz (via Drancy) began, the "Aufbau" published a list of names of the first transport, including 1,000 Jewish men and women.
