Abstract:
Discusses the life and literary work of Weil, who as a student of German philology was forced to interrupt her studies in 1933; in 1937 she followed her husband Edgar into exile in Holland. Her mother arrived there just before the entry of the German army in May 1940. Edgar was arrested in June 1941, deported to Mauthausen, and murdered there. Weil worked for the Jewish Council in Amsterdam and falsified identity papers. In fall 1943 she and her mother went into hiding until the war's end. In 1947 she decided to return to Germany, not believing in the collective guilt of the German people. Through her writings, in which she coped with her painful experiences, she tried, in vain, to open the eyes of German readers in the early 1960s. She received recognition only in the 1980s with the publication of "My Sister, My Antigone".
