Abstract:
Shabbat is perhaps the most prominent boundary marker of the Jewish people today. Shabbat (also Shabbos or Sabbath) in its various forms in Hebrew means, “to rest” and “to cease working”. For roughly 3,000 years, the Jewish people have made fifty-two pilgrimages to Shabbat per year. That is, they have traveled throughout each week with the seventh day as their destination. They have made this journey with much preparation, anticipation, and respect of those who came before. Even today, in our increasingly secular society, a majority of Jews observe some form of Shabbat. In this chapter, we view various snapshots of Shabbat from its origins to the present. We accomplish this in three sections: (1) foundations of Shabbat, (2) theological and mystical expansions of Shabbat, and (3) Shabbat in lived religious experience.
