Kurzfassung:
Discusses the problem of defining German identity in relation to the Nazi past. The descent of many Germans from perpetrators or bystanders is often minimized by viewing the Holocaust as a tragedy in which ordinary Germans had no choice of how to respond and, therefore, little or no responsibility. A complicating factor is the large immigrant or immigrant-descended population that identifies with German culture but not with its history, i.e. the Holocaust.
