Abstract:
Based on a survey conducted in Germany in 1991, during which 2,923 citizens were interviewed, 993 of whom lived in former East Germany. The responses are analyzed using Linear Structural Relations. The method is helpful in revealing "symbolic racism" toward the Jews, i.e. adherence to conservative values, assessments of Jewish work ethics, etc. The analysis shows that, among Germans, a basic antisemitic affect is separate from symbolic forms of antisemitism. The method used indicates that negative racial affect outweighs other factors in explaining Germans' willingness to assume responsibility for the "Jewish question, " suggesting that Germans base their attitudes toward Jews on the crudest and most enduring stereotypes (Jewish influence in the world, Jewish guilt for the death of Jesus, etc.) and feel little need to express their reservations in symbolic terms.
