Abstract: The Tribe of Dan has always appeared to biblical scholars and archaeologists as something of an enigma. For decades, certain scholars, beginning with Yigael Yadin, have proposed a connection between the Denyen/Danaoi Sea People and the Danites of Ancient Israel, arguing that the former became the latter and were adopted into Israel at a later date than the other 11 tribes. Focusing on recent archaeological excavations at Tel Dan and the connections between Samson and Hercules, with special attention specifically given to Dan’s traditional paired imagery with serpents, this study seeks to present a coherent case for the possibility that Yadin’s theory may soon carry weight.

In:  The Oxford Handbook of the Apocrypha (2021) 74-93
    Language: English
    Year of publication: 2021
Titel der Quelle: The Oxford Handbook of the Apocrypha
    Angaben zur Quelle: (2021) 74-93
Keywords: Bible Canon ; History ; Apocrypha Appreciation ; Protestantism
Abstract: Due to the fact that most modern Protestant creeds do not explicitly reject the Apocrypha as inspired or define what books make up the canon they refer to when speaking of the Old Testament (nor did many of their spiritual forebears during the Reformation), it must be acknowledged that for many Protestants, the Old Testament canon has not been formally closed since the Reformation began. This may have been caused by fact that Protestant reformers did not all reject the Apocrypha, but to the contrary, continued to support their status as a strange middle-ground, the Reformation made no concrete or agreed decisions or assessments regarding the status of the Apocrypha. Moreover, the reformers who held positive views of these books went in one of two directions: to continue the tradition of treating these books as essential for Bibles but inferior in status, or treating the category as a temporary purgatory until such a time that their correct status as inspired or uninspired could be determined.

Abstract: For countless centuries, the story of Lot's daughters in Genesis has both abhorred and intrigued countless readers. Utilizing the hermeneutical lenses of Narrative and Feminist Criticism, this article draws attention to overlooked details in the narrative. The story is also contrasted with that of the Levite's Concubine in Judges 19. This study concludes that the narrative has been misread by past interpreters, arguing that the eldest daughter intentionally sought to deceive her younger sister for the intention of shaming their father as retribution for endangering their lives in Sodom. It proposes that the narrative of Gen. 19.30-38 is a dramatic representation by its author of divine irony and a strikingly pro-feminine text for the patriarchal society in which and to which it was written.
