Abstract:
Discusses various aspects of interviews conducted by the Central Jewish Historical Commission in Poland between 1944-48 with 437 child survivors. The interviews were based on specially developed, "scientific" questionnaires, which were to reveal the scope of the Nazi crimes and the children's heroism, and document their suffering as well as the effects of the persecution on their psyche. However, the interviews and the summaries written by the interviewers only loosely adhered to the prescribed formula. Nevertheless, they describe various forms of survival, persecution, and aid, and convey the children's feelings as well as their interpretations of the situation. With regard to their status as historical sources, argues that the summaries consitute a cross between oral and written material.
