Abstract:
Karl Kautsky, the leading Marxist theoretician, evinced a strong interest in the "Jewish question". Examines his writings from the 1880s to the 1930s in regard to the Jews. Already in the 1880s he stated that the antisemitic movement was reactionary and an enemy of socialism. He attacked socialists who expressed antisemitic views, although he never discussed Marx's "Der Judenfrage", apparently not wishing to criticize Marx openly. Kautsky believed that the solution to the "Jewish problem" was assimilation; therefore, he was opposed to Zionism. He supported the Bund, in the belief that Jews had to achieve freedom and equality before they could assimilate. Concludes that Kautsky identified with the plight of the Jews and fought against antisemitism throughout his career. Notes that both of his wives were Jews; his second wife perished in Auschwitz.
