Abstract:
Deals with the SED's fight against foreign cultural influences which derive, according to their convictions, from American imperialism, Jewish capitalism, and Zionist organizations. Jews were seen as responsible for all negative economic, political, and social phenomena which were involved in the reorganization of industrial-capitalistic societies. In the campaign against Western decadence and in favor of encouraging "pure" German culture, the SED needed a major enemy to blame for its problems and, in the absence of Jews in the DDR, developed an "antisemitism without Jews" which was transformed into anti-Zionism.
