Abstract:
Research on the Book of Jubilees allows us to formulate more precisely the questions about the writing and rewriting of a text in ancient Judaism. For example, debates over whether the fifty Ethiopic chapters constitute a redactional unit raise the question of the distinction and boundary between the sources used and the editorial activity of one or more editors. Furthermore, studies advocating a return to the text read in its medium in relation to the message delivered may be promising in the near future, but as it stands, they do not provide any assurance of a literary history specific to the Hebrew version(s) of Jubilees, as the function of each Jubilee manuscript discovered in the Qumran caves eludes us. The manuscripts 4Q225, 4Q226 and 4Q227, called “Pseudo-Jubilees” by moderns, are part of these debates on the plurality and pluriformity of the Jubilees text, especially the Hebrew text of Jubilees. If it seems difficult to rule on 4Q227, 4Q225 and 4Q226 do not resemble a new version of Jubilees but several writings obeying the same editorial choice on the role of demons in biblical episodes.
