Abstract:
This study seeks to answer the question as to how the concept of loyalty may be applied to describe the relationship of Transylvanian Jews, on the one hand, with the Romanian state, and, on the other hand, with the Transylvanian Hungarian minority, between 1918 and 1940. The first half of the study traces the conceptual framework for the analysis and describes the meaning of the concept of loyalty between the two world wars. The study then presents the Romanian state’s policy toward the Jews. The last chapter examines the declarations of loyalty made by the Transylvanian Jews in the interwar period.
