Abstract:
Surveys antisemitic manifestations during the 1990 election campaign among the new right-wing political parties, former communists, and representatives of Solidarity. Argues that Polish society is not characterized by mass antisemitism but rather mass tolerance of antisemitism. Mentions Cardinal Glemp's antisemitic statements during the polemic regarding the Carmelite convent at Auschwitz and the increase of antisemitic graffiti and sales of antisemitic literature, and remarks on the lack of reaction of political or Church leaders. Discusses the use of antisemitic stereotypes by Wałęsa and attacks directed by his supporters against Mazowiecki, accused of being a "secret" Jew. Points to the role of some Catholic priests in the dissemination of antisemitic rumors, as well as the strong reactions against antisemitism expressed by Adam Michnik, the priest Michał Czajkowski, and prominent Polish intellectuals. Notes the acceptance of antisemitism as an element of the Polish political reality, explained by the fact that in postwar Poland antisemitism has not been delegitimized.
