Abstract:
Analyzes reports given by three Jewish historians on the following topics: the expulsion of the Jews from Bohemia in 1541-42; an edict issued in 1559 to expel the Jews from Bohemia again; the fire in the Jewish Quarter of Prague on 22 June 1559; and the confiscation of Jewish books in Prague following a decree issued in 1560. In addition, examines five other accounts of the 1541-42 expulsion left by contemporary authors, both Jews and converts. Although the sources differ in their explanations of the covert motives of the 1541-42 expulsion (the overt motive was an accusation of arson), they agree on the details of this expulsion, as well as on other traumatic events that befell the Jewish community of Prague.
