Abstract:
Discusses attempts made, since the 1960s, to reform the text of the Oberammergau passion play, a version which has been in use since 1853. Contends that it is important to understand the background of political and economic factional strife in the village, which began in 1961 over updating the text. Notes that the village is economically dependent on tourists who come to see the play. In 1967, Church authorities in Munich directed the village to revise the text to exclude all antisemitism, but the revision was rejected. This is one of three papers (published in this issue of the journal) which were delivered at a symposium held by the German Studies Association in Denver in October 1984, on the Oberammergau passion play. The papers are followed by a response by Saul S. Friedman (pp. 21-24), in which he calls for further revision of the play's text, following a few revisions already made.
