Abstract:
The Majorcan Chuetas were accused and tried several times for Judaizing - the last time in 1693, when the "sambenitos" (garments worn by heretics) marked with the names of 15 families were publicly exposed. The local aristocracy were interested in isolationg these families in order to avoid competition from the rich Converso merchants. The Chuetas were subject to racial discrimination, and occasionally even violence (e.g. in 1809 and 1823). In 1942 an enquiry into Chuetas was made at the instigation of the German and Italian consulates, with the support of the Spanish Falange. However, the results (that 35% of Majorcans had Jewish blood) made plans for their deportation impossible. Discrimination has decreased rapidly since 1945.
