Abstract:
The article explores the cooperation between Eleanor Rathbone, a Member of the British Parliament, and Esther Simpson, the secretary and linchpin of the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning, in challenging the injustice of wartime internment from 1940 to 1942. Topics discussed include a policy of mass internment of enemy aliens introduced by Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and the human tragedy behind the success of the Society.
