Abstract:
Describes attitudes to the Holocaust among Germans in Göttingen in the year after the war. University faculty avoided the subject, even when speaking of recent history. Only a few Protestant churchmen, notably Martin Niemöller, addressed students on the need to confront and confess German guilt; many students resented their admonition. Also sketches the ambivalent attitudes of three Jews, refugees from Germany, who came to Göttingen with the occupying armies.
