Abstract:
States that judgments pronounced on Jews and Judaism in Greek and Roman literature depend largely on the insight of the writer on the subject, ranging from admiration or tolerance to outright rejection. The more the knowledge of the writer about Judaism was limited, the more he gave way to negatively expressed fears and prejudices. In quantity, there is a prevalence of sources rejecting the Jews. However, contrary to modern interpretations, the Jewish religion itself was viewed positively, as well as the fact that the Jews had remained faithful to it. On the negative side was the view of their strange way of life, based on religious principles such as circumcision and the dietary laws. Notes analogies in form and content with modern antisemitism.
