Abstract:
A lecture delivered at a colloquium organized by the Calamus Foundation. Suggests that the peaceful co-existence between Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Spain was destroyed by the Christian conquerors who feared other religions as "the enemy within." Describes forced conversion of both Jews and Muslims, and the Inquisition's persecution of "New Christians" whom it suspected of secretly clinging to the old faith. Hypothesizes that Western Christianity emphasized somber and frightening aspects of the faith which easily led to persecution of others. Pp. 11-21 contain responses to Armstrong's lecture by Juan A. Lalaguna, David Abulafia, and Roger Abdul Wahhab Boase. Abulafia (pp. 14-16) analyzes medieval Christian anti-Judaism, which escalated in the 13th century in other countries of Europe, not only in Spain. Both he and Boase (pp. 16-21) see in Christianity's attitude to Jews a prototype of its attitude to Muslims.
