Abstract:
Contends that antisemitism in present-day Ukraine is more widespread than officially acknowledged; moreover, it is a growing problem. Aggressive antisemites constitute a well-organized and influential lobby with connections and influences that reach the very top of society. Many Ukrainians harbor antisemitic views, and there is a vast market for antisemitic publications. The main institution disseminating antisemitism throughout Ukraine is the Interregional Academy of Personnel Management (MAUP), responsible for ca. 70% of all antisemitic publications in Ukraine. This influential educational institution, having seven regional branches across Ukraine, is financed by some Arab regimes and Iran, and before 2006 was supported by Ukraine's top leaders, including President Yushchenko. Dwells on the antisemitic views of some prolific writers affiliated with the MAUP: Levko Lukyanenko, Vasyl Yaremenko, Eduard Khodos (who claims to have Jewish origins), and others. Their views combine myths of the extreme right, like the Jewish world conspiracy, Jewish communism, responsibility of Jews for the Ukrainian famine of 1932-33, with motifs specific to the Soviet-era "anti-Zionist" campaign (in particular, the Zionist-Nazi plot). Despite the generally anti-Russian tone of these nationalist writers, they adopt many ideas from Russian antisemitic ideologists, like Yurii Mukhin or Lev Gumilev. States that despite the eccentric nature of many of these antisemitic arguments, they need to be taken seriously; to keep on denying or to downplay their existence and influence would be a mistake.
