Abstract:
While focusing on the postwar Soviet secret police file on the Yiddish writer, which reflects his arrest and interrogation, casts light on much of Kipnis's career. One of the charges against him was "nationalism" for his literary depiction in "Khadoshim un teg" of Ukrainians as antisemites for their role in civil war pogroms. Kipnis was greatly affected by the suffering of Soviet Jews during the Holocaust and realized the need for Jews to survive with their identity intact. This also riled the Soviets, who considered such a position too Jewish. He was sentenced to ten years in prison for anti-Soviet propaganda, fostering hatred for the Ukrainian people, and threatening to kill his son (he actually threatened suicide) when his offspring, the son of a Ukrainian mother, wanted to be registered as a Ukrainian. He was rehabilitated after Stalin's death.
