Abstract: Traces the policy and ideas of Mihail Kogălniceanu - the main Romanian political figure in the second half of the 19th century - concerning the "Jewish question" in Romania. Emphasizes his program, as Prime Minister, for a "gradual" political and social emancipation of the Jews, and their integration in Romanian society through education in Romanian schools and abandonment of Jewish traditional clothes and habits. Mentions his opposition, as Minister of the Interior (1868-70), to the settlement of Jews in the villages because they were considered as alien and as "vagabonds", and his moderate attitude, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, during the debate on Jewish emancipation at the Berlin Peace Conference (1878). Considers as excessive the strong critical reactions to his policy expressed by the Alliance Israélite Universelle and the Western powers.
Note: On the emancipation of Romanian Jewry in the thought and political policies of Mihail Kogalniceanu (19th century Romanian prime minister).
