    Angaben zur Quelle: 119, 5 (2005) 27-45
Schlagwort(e): Arab-Israeli conflict ; Antisemitism History 1800-2000 ; France Foreign relations ; Israel Foreign relations ; Eretz Israel Relations ; France Relations ; Eretz Israel History 1517-1917, Ottoman period ; Eretz Israel History 1917-1948, British Mandate period
Kurzfassung: Traces anti-Jewish and pro-Arab tendencies in French foreign policy from the end of the 18th century and the beginning of French interests in the Arab world. Opposition to Jewish nationalism began with the French Revolution and France's unwillingness to grant rights to the Jews as a nation. The French Foreign Ministry has been marked by an aristocratic, Catholic-oriented antisemitism, which came to include opposition to Zionism. French interests were identified with those of the Arabs. Antisemitism was expressed by such diplomats as the writers Paul Morand and (for some time) Paul Claudel, and by the aid given by France to Haj Amin al-Husaini in escaping possible British detention and trial in 1946. An influential figure in French foreign policy was the antisemitic Orientalist Louis Massignon. Even after the Vichy period, when France collaborated with the Nazis, French policy persisted in its antisemitism, including opposition to a Jewish state both before and after 1948. When the presidential system was instated, De Gaulle was pro-Arab, as were his successors. Now, with Muslim antisemitism rife domestically, French officials have been loathe to condemn it or to reorient their policy toward Israel.
Anmerkung: Appeared in French as "La diplomatie française, les Juifs et les Arabes" in "Commentaire" 112 (2005-2006) 833-857. A response to the French version, by Maurice Vaïsse, appeared in "Commentaire" 115 (2006) 615-624.

    Erscheinungsjahr: 1988
Titel der Quelle: Collaboration in France
    Angaben zur Quelle: (1988) 15-31
    Schlagwort(e): Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)
Kurzfassung: A paper presented at an international workshop held in London, September 1987. Discusses Vichy’s anti-Jewish legislation, emphasizing that the initiative was taken by Vichy, and was not demanded by the German occupiers at first. Describes French assistance with deportation of the Jews, which began in July 1942. Notes the divided response of the Catholic Church (almost none) vis-à-vis the protests of the Protestant community. States that the motives for an individual’s collaboration (i.e. revealing the identity of Jews in hiding) were often envy and a sense of national failure. (Note that the term "Paris" in the title is used as a synonym for "France" - ed.)
Anmerkung: Appeared in German as "Paris unter der deutschen Besatzung" in "Kollaboration in Frankreich" (1991) 23-42.

    Schlagwort(e): Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) ; Antisemitism History 1945- ; Holocaust denial
Kurzfassung: Notes that hundreds of thousands of Frenchmen collaborated with the Nazis in organizing the deportation of Jews. After the war, many collaborators were tried, but for crimes against the state, not against the Jews. In 1953 a general amnesty was declared. Since then the French have generally evaded confrontation with the past. Criticizes Sartre's "Reflexions sur la question juive", one of the few attempts to deal with the subject, as providing further fuel for antisemitism. Traces the phenomenon of Holocaust denial in France, beginning with Maurice Bardeche in 1947, continuing with Paul Rassinier and his followers, and culminating with Le Pen and his Front National. Blames the French government for its ineptness in dealing with antisemitism. A 1964 law enabling the state to try "crimes against humanity" was not utilized until the Barbie trial in 1986; mention of his French accomplices was suppressed. However, public opinion polls show a sharp decline in antisemitism and offer grounds for hope.

    Schlagwort(e): Antisemitism History 1945-
Kurzfassung: Opposes the appeasement policies of many Western European countries in the face of an increasingly large influx of Muslim immigrants from the 1950s-60s to the present. Muslims in Europe now number ca. 20 million, twenty times more than the number of Jews. Europeans, especially the Left and the media, have shown indifference to the fate of the Jews in Europe today, both as victims of Muslim antisemitic attacks and as potential victims, collectively, in Israel which is threatened by a nuclear Iran. Europe is now on the brink of another "terrible transformation". Jews are testing out the extent to which European civilization really has become hollowed out from within, and unable to withstand assault from without.
