Abstract:
Examines the role of Jewish moneylenders in 16th century Italy and the importance of usury in Jewish-Christian relations based on Shakespeare's portrayal of Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice." Contends that the antisemitic interpretation of Shylock as the Jewish moneylender is incorrect; argues that Shakespeare portrays the Jew in a positive light while showing the judicial system in a negative light.
Note:
Specifically in "The Merchant of Venice".
