Abstract:
Examines Poland's diplomatic efforts to protect its citizens against Nazi terror and discrimination between 1933-39, based on official documents. Notes that Poland feared Jewish re-emigration and encouraged Jews and other minorities to leave Poland in the 1930s due to the economic crisis. In March 1938, Polish legislation revoking the citizenship of Poles living abroad who had lost ties with Poland alarmed the Germans who saw this as a move to prevent their own efforts to repatriate Polish Jews. In reaction, on the night of 28 October 1938, Germany forcibly expelled thousands of Polish Jews to the frontier town of Zbąszyń. The Poles threatened to retaliate by expelling Germans from Poland. The mass expulsions ceased, but rapidly deteriorating relations between Germany and Poland ensured that the Polish government could do very little to help Polish Jews in Germany.
