Abstract:
Discusses Polish-Jewish relations during World War II, e.g. the anti-Jewish riots in Warsaw in spring 1940, the attitudes of the Polish underground, and anti-Jewish propaganda in Polish collaborationist newspapers. Focuses on Polish betrayal and blackmailing of Jews in hiding, including the role of the Polish police in such betrayal and the attitude of the Polish underground toward the blackmailing of Jews, especially on the "Aryan side" of Warsaw. Żegota, the Delegatura's Council for Aid to Jews, criticized such acts only in spring 1943, but then condemned some Poles to death for these actions. The first underground newspaper report of such punishment appeared at the same time. Although many left-wing newspapers condemned betrayal and collaboration, they claimed that few Poles collaborated with the Nazis; there were rarely calls for solidarity with the Jews and very few reports on aid to Jews. On the other hand, some right-wing underground newspapers noted the importance of ridding Poland of its Jews.
