Abstract:
Relating mainly to the situation amongst intellectuals and academics in the U.S., queries how one might understand the recent intense preoccupation with Jews, and especially with Israel. States that when we encounter antagonism - toward Jews or Israel - the memories of horrible times elicit reactions that are often sincere, acute, and disorienting. However, it is difficult to determine where prejudice ends and antisemitic bigotry begins - to determine the difference between politics and metaphysics, between protest (e.g. against Israel’s policies) and unvarnished hatred. Contends that one must distinguish between perceptions predicated on fact and those shaped by myth.
