Abstract:
The antisemitism in Eastern Europe is due to several factors: economic hardship, the extreme views of radicals (both Right and Left) concerning "Others", attempts made by nationalists to rehabilitate fascist leaders who collaborated with the Nazis, the influence of the traditionally antisemitic Orthodox Church, demands for reparations made by Jewish organizations, and the reluctance of governments to punish offenders. Antisemitic propaganda includes dissemination of "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and "Mein Kampf", the use of medieval Christian motifs (e.g. deicide and blood libel), accusations of Jewish collaboration with the Nazis, comparison of the Holocaust with the "communist destruction" (for which the Jews are blamed), and Holocaust revisionism. In Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the Baltic States there is less antisemitism because efforts are made to prosecute offenders. Advocates educating the younger generation concerning Jews and the Holocaust in order to reduce antisemitism.
