Abstract:
In a previous article [in "Pe’amim" 46-47 (1991)], Orfali and a colleague compared the Castilian decree of expulsion with another version which they discovered was addressed to Aragon, Valencia, and Catalonia. Discusses here differences in the introductory part (the "narratio") of the decree, which presents the reasons for the expulsion. The Castilian version mentions only religious reasons, but the Aragonese version emphasizes the Jews’ practice of usury, stating that the Jews prey upon and seize control of the Christians’ property with unmerciful cruelty. In the late Middle Ages, the problem of usury assumed satanic dimensions as a divisive power in society and the source of immorality. King Ferdinand concurred with the heads of the Inquisition (who no doubt drafted both versions of the expulsion decree) that making reference to usury would have an influence on the lower urban classes, the farmers, and the artisans to support the expulsion. Pp. 66-69 contain a facsimile of the decree.
