Abstract:
Argues that Abravanel’s success in 16th-century Jewish print culture, with 17 printed editions of his works (15 of them in Italy) was not a simple matter of taste or commerce, but a sign of the positive reception of his conception of the agency of Jewish books and authorship. This conception allowed, or even called for, a new political and social use of the printed Jewish book. In what follows, I want to present a case study of Abravanel’s notion of book-agency and authorship, and of its reception by his printers, that of Abravanel’s commentary on Daniel, "Ma‘aynei ha-Yeshu‘a", which is composed of three major layers: the biblical text of Daniel; Abravanel’s commentary completed in 1497; and the editors’ presentation of the commentary.
