Abstract:
Surveys German postwar historiography, concentrating on the "historians' debate" initiated in the 1980s by Ernst Nolte, who compared Nazi crimes to Stalin's and to other crimes of the 20th century and underlined the necessity of Germany's defense against communism. Surveys, as well, Andreas Hillgruber's writings and the reaction of Jürgen Habermas to these revisionist theses. Analyzes Nolte's and his opponents' explanations of the Holocaust and of the role of Hitler. Shows how the development of German historiography was always related to the socio-political situation in the country at every stage of discussion from 1946 to the present, and concludes that Nolte did not convince the greater part of German historians that the Third Reich was only a response to the worse evil, i.e. Bolshevism.
