Abstract:
A recent attempt to accord the American anthropologist Clark Wissler (1870-1947) a central role in the history of anthropology ignores his blatant racism, expressed not only in scholarly circles, but also in his work for the U.S. government. He gave "scientific" status to the 1924 Immigration Act, which preferred "Nordic" immigrants and reduced the quota for others. Although he was not specifically anti-Jewish, Wissler bears responsibility for use of the Act to prevent the admission of Jewish refugees into the U.S.
