Abstract:
Sylvin Rubinstein (1914-2011) was a Polish Jewish (Russian-born) flamenco dancer and cross-dresser, who performed with his twin sister Maria as "Imperio y Dolores" in music halls throughout Europe, as well as in New York and Australia. They were performing in Warsaw when Germany invaded Poland in September 1939. They were interned in the Warsaw ghetto, but managed to escape. Wehrmacht Major Kurt Werner recognized Rubinstein on the street and decided to rescue him. He got him false papers, trained him in military prowess, and connected him with the Polish underground. Rubinstein became an accomplished assassin and saboteur; he was sent on missions to kill Nazis in Poland and Berlin, passing as a woman. His mother and sister died in Treblinka. After the war, Rubinstein settled in Hamburg. Kruse has written a biography (2000) and made a film (2004) about Rubinstein's life.
