Abstract:
Argues that the language of description of such a unique event as the Holocaust is a very difficult problem for contemporary historians. Analyzes categories of historical narrative and reflects on their inadequacy. Discusses the following categories: explanatory narrative, meaning analysis of how the Nazi state functioned; micro-historic narrative, which is limited to the description of the everyday lives of ordinary people (victims or perpetrators) - e.g. books by Christopher Browning; chronicle-type narrative, without any interpretation - e.g. Berel Lang; and a narrative which overcomes all traditional descriptions from the linguistic point of view, represented mainly by Hayden White.
